I love this thing. It's a bit pricey, but I think it's worth the piece of mind.I got it as a gift for myself, because it is so expensive that I couldn't ask anyone to pay that price, but I need it. In other words, I recommend as a gift for someone you love -- even if that person does Know they might need this thing. In addition to being a battery jumper and tire inflator, this thing can also be used as a power source for your laptop in your vehicle or away from a traditional wall socket (at home or the office, etc.). I use mine to power and charge my laptop and phone when I have time to get to my parked car, but not enough time to get all the way back home.Other reviewers have already stated to keep it charged: check on it every month or so, if you don't use yours regularly. Why? If your power goes out due to blackout or weather emergency, this thing has two USB plugs and two ac (wall plug outlets) and two dc (cigarette lighter sockets). You can charge your phone, flashlight, radio, etc.Obviously, I take this in my car for those "just in case" moments. I've used it to jump automobile batteries, inflate tires, blow up a kiddie pool, and run a car vacuum in my house. It's worth the investment. If you get stuck in the middle of nowhere and need this thing, if you get stuck without electricity and need this thing, you will love this thing.I gave it four stars because, after 4 years of use, I found the inflator hose had cracked. That's not a big deal for me. I looked inside the device to see if I could just unplug the cracked hose and replace it with a new one. Please see pics. That's when I realized that the compressor wasn't fastened to the wall of the housing for this device. Luckily, it's still working, but you can see in the photos that a large gear was cutting into a part of the housing which could possibly break the gear and other components of this machine. I fixed it by adding two screws to secure the compressor to the housing. In the pics, in the 2nd photo you can see where I added the two screws. The 3rd photo shows the compressor is now in a position free from hitting anything. I don't know if this just happened to my particular item? I say this because, after looking for a place to attach the screws, that place where I screwed them to the housing, there are holes for screws, just no screws.Even with the one flaw, I still recommend this machine. The problem is easily fixed, and the pros outweigh the cons.I have had this item for over a year. The number one thing you should know is that it is under-powered. If you need it for jump starting, hope that you don't just have that dreaded click left in your battery. I could not get the engine to turn over from that depth of discharge. Another time (warmer, with the battery able to just turn over the engine) this was able to give me just enough to get it started. I'd have been in the 3-4 range overall if I hadn't had another issue just last week. My tire developed a slow leak, getting down to about 15 lbs before I noticed. This device gave me back about 5 lbs before it quit. Okay, maybe it got over heated. Waited 30 minutes, tried again, got 1 lb more before it quit. Battery meter showed 17%. This was enough for me to limp it to the garage and get my tire looked at, but wouldn't have gotten me far in an emergency. This is the 3rd unit ive head, the other two died 1 before 12 months the other after. High failure rate, useless and noisey air compressor, long charge time. if discharged to less than 10% you can consider it hosed. this recent one i purchased 2 days ago was damaged in transit (parts loose inside), and would not take a charge. I had it in my possession for 2 hours before trying to return it. I only found out it was not returnable AFTER i had a problem with it. Amazon does not disclose that its one of the non returnable items, you have to figure it out for yourself. Its a HAZMAT issue, yet, they were able to ship it to me just fine, just dont accept them back. Makes you wonder how they have all the used ones for sale if they dont take them back. I tried 4 times with different amazon CSR reps, 2 lied to me and just left the chat session, the other 2 said no and no matter the reason told me to contact SHUMACHER electric, which their support email box is full and mail bounced. Time to pickup the phone and call during business hours. If shumacher doesnt issue a refund im taking this up with my Credit card company. Now i have 20lb doorstop that has "die hard" written on it, lol. They things are just low quality chinese crap, but the battery is made in mexico if that gives you more confidence. Spend the extra $50 and get a bullet proof SHUMACHER DSR pro charger, used one at our dealership for about 5 years now (no issues). with this product you get what you pay for. Also im not trying to be overdramatic, anyone else would have 1 starred this review. Amazons policy on this very deceptive and they dont disclose when you buy it to "buy at your own risk, no returns allowed." if i had known i would not have purchased it with any confidence. This policy also applies to bb guns, rc cars, some liquid supplements, and anything else that is dangerous, has chemicals, or a battery. This is Amazon's choosing to not accept returns on this, and it really puts the buyer in tough position. Do you really think that shumacher will take any responsibility for something that was damaged in transit? that is not a defect, how stupid do you think i am amazon? fix the issue please. Now i will find a place to properly dispose of my $165 lesson learned. still i like amazon 90% of the time. Just dont buy it, there is a reason why sears never has these in stock, they are problematic. Even a cheaper shumacher jumper at walmart has higher quality. good luck folks. I now have 2 failed units sitting next to each other. 2 of 3 failed you make the decision. The first one i bought from sears BTW in 2018. Same crap.its so reliable. worth every penny. im planning to buy 1 more. jump start wirks gread tried it 2x already big help. even the 400watts plug in its so useful, also the air compressor etc.UPDATE: after 2years, rubber from the jumpstart start peeling and air compressor stop workingUPDATE: i called CS yesterday and they said i already passed with the 1year warranty so they cant hel me. so what i did is i open the unit and i saw the fuse for air compression was broken. i put wire to connect and now its working again.I just used it for the first time tonight, we had a black-out that lasted 3 hours.I ran a 15 watts del light and charged/used 2 cell phones and the battery only discharged to 71%.Useful, I didn't have to plug my generator and burn fuel. It's quite portable too, I walked 300 feet in darkness with it in hand. The light on it is good enough to see where you are going.I have been looking for a reliable Portable Power Source and fortunately, I found this DieHard 71688 Platinum on Amazon. It looks tough and durable with multi functions from USB charger to Jump Starter and everything you may need in case of emergency. Of course it is a bit heavy and it takes a bit long time for the initial charge of the internal battery but other than that everything works great as expected.I highly recommend this DieHard 71688 Platinum Power Source and I may buy another one in the future. Was disappointed to find that all of the packaging had obviously been opened before. Scratches on unit and loosely packed inside the box where some packing material was missing. Battery was already charged to 100%. Am not able to return due to the COVID shutdowns. As far as I can tell, the unit works well, but I have no idea how it was maintained or handled by the previous order. This is definitely not a product I would ever want to buy used. Not a great first impression.
